Davenport man, 18, faces attempted murder, other charges after gunfire

An 18-year-old Davenport man faces five felony charges – including attempted murder – after incidents in January, Davenport Police allege in arrest affidavits.

Willis Dickerson, who was booked into Scott County Jail shortly after 2 p.m. today after he was arrested on a warrant, faces felony charges of attempted murder, intimidation with a dangerous weapon – injure/provoke fear, stalking – possession of dangerous weapon, going armed with intent, and control of a firearm by a felon, court records show.

Gunfire in January

At 9 p.m. Jan. 26, Davenport Police responded to the 1800 block of West 17th Street for a report of gunfire. In the intersection of West 17th Street and Wilkes Avenue, officers found 15 spent 9mm casings, police say in affidavits.

A victim, located nearby, was driving a black Chevy Malibu that had been shot no fewer than three times, including one in the rear driver-side door, affidavits show.

Dickerson was observed in the back seat passenger side of a suspect vehicle, affidavits show. Dickerson pointed a gun at the victim and fired at him as the vehicles were driving by each other, driver-side to driver-side in opposite directions, police allege in affidavits.

Dickerson and “multiple co-defendants” had approached the victim with guns at Riverside Liquor, 1528 W. Locust St., Davenport, about 15 minutes prior to the shooting, police allege in affidavits. “Video recovered from the area of Riverside Liquor shows the defendant and codefendant clearly waiting for the victim to exit the store,” officers say in affidavits.

Dickerson, police allege in affidavits, “clearly waited for the victim to exit the liquor store to confront him with a firearm. This was captured on camera. (Dickerson) then went to the area of the victim’s home in wait for him to return.”

In January, Davenport Police executed a search warrant on Dickerson’s social media accounts and recovered a video of Dickerson with a handgun, firing it at the Princeton Shooting Range five miles north of Princeton, 29350 286th Street, Princeton, Iowa.

The firearm is shown being fired no fewer than seven times, capturing the audio of the gunshots, with each shot ejecting a casing and projectile that can be seen striking the ground downrange, affidavits show.

Affidavits say analysis of the video shows it was captured between the dates of Jan. 9-11 during a time Dickerson was prohibited from the possession of firearms.

“A criminal history check of the defendant shows multiple felony convictions prohibiting his possession of firearms,” officers say in affidavits.

Dickerson is on pretrial release out of Scott County for three additional cases involving theft and gun charges, according to affidavits and court records.

He is being held on a total $20,000 cash-only bond in Scott County Jail, court records show.

The charge of attempted murder is a Class B felony in Iowa and, upon conviction, can carry a sentence up to 25 years in prison.
